Pre-school Curriculum The curriculum is set out in the Curriculum Framework for Children 3 to 5 established by the Scottish Executive. It comprises the following components:
Young children learn through play, and their interactions with their environment, and the people around them. Attitudes and behaviour patterns established early in childhood provide the foundation for the future social, emotional and intellectual development. Children's learning is holistic; children's play is totally integrated. "Play makes a major contribution to all aspects of children's development and learning. It allows them to learn in a broad variety of ways. It allows them to listen and observe, to talk, to explore, investigate and experiment and to draw and test their conclusions and learn about the world which surrounds them. It allows them to express their ideas and feelings in many different ways, to inhabit imagined situations and act out and come to terms with experiences at home or with friends. It allows them to be solitary or to play with others and develop relationships. It allows them to relax or to consolidate previous learning or to be intensely involved and challenged in new learning. Play is important because it makes a powerful contribution to young children's development and learning." Curricular Framework for Children 3-5 When children begin nursery at Braeside, parents are given a copy of our booklet Starting Nursery which provides further information on the day to day running of the nursery. Throughout the year we keep parents informed of the learning outcomes of themes and activities. Although our school aims relate to the whole school from nursery through to Primary 2, our main emphasis in nursery is to:
